It’s that time of year — Awards shows are coming into season. You need to get your Oscar party ideas together because the Academy Awards are the granddaddy of them all!
There is no more fun theme for a party than an Oscar Party. It’s one of my favorites.
Whether you are holding an Oscar party at your home or want to use it as a theme for an event, we have gathered lots of ideas for you.
What type of Parties or Events can Use Oscar Party Ideas?
It is virtually unlimited! Some of the occasions or events that would be great to use an Oscar theme include:
- Birthday Parties
- Proms
- Baby Showers
- Bridal Showers
- Fundraising Galas
- Anniversaries
- Wedding Receptions
- Rehearsal Dinners
and the like. An appealing part of an Oscars party is that “everyone is a star”. Your VIP, if you have one is the biggest star that night! I have personally used the Oscar’s theme for a birthday party, fundraising gala and prom. They were all wonderful and not two the same. The guests to all three events were impressed with the Hollywood style invitations, theme and decorations. Let’s take a look at a few different Oscar party ideas…
Entrance — The Red Carpet
Your entrance is the biggest of big deals for an Oscar party. This is the infamous “Red Carpet”. You can go all out here for say a wedding reception or fundraiser. You can tone it down a bit for the other types of parties but your Oscars entrance needs to make a great first impression.
Big Splash Oscar Entrance
If you want to go all out, start with a red carpet. It is a MUST HAVE to set the mood of the theme. You could:
- Get a Red Carpet

- Secure a non-profit group to act as valet parking attendants (FFA, VFW, Lions Club, etc…)
- Have the cars pull up to the beginning of the red carpet just like Hollywood. The attendants can open their doors for them, then move the vehicle so the next group can arrive.
- Set up stanchions around the “aisle” the red carpet makes to keep the groups and press away from the arriving “stars”.
- If possible, use people/kids dressed as Paparazzi (reporters/photographers). They can wear overcoats and hats with a “Press Pass” stuck in the hat. Give them throw away cameras with flashes and something that simulates a camera flash. Each time someone arrives, have them yell questions and take pictures or flash the lights.

The staunchion set really adds a lot to the theme as well. If you don’t want to buy the props, you could make your own as well. All of these elements would come together to make a lasting first impression on your guests. You need to decide if you want to use all, one or a few of these entrance Oscar party ideas and then get to it!
Main Party Room Oscar’s Decorations
There are tons and tons of different Oscar party ideas you can use. Where you place the decor and props is dependent on the type of venue that is playing host to the party. If it’s a home, obviously you should make sure each public party room has something that continues the theme along.
If it is held in a banquet room, you can divide the room with props and decorations into different areas of activity. Places for food, drink, guest tables, dancing, a stage if you are having a “program”, etc…

Your Oscar party ideas should include little groupings (vignettes or scenes) set up around the venue/home. Think about places like the restrooms, bar, check-in table, and more.
Plan and Follow Through for Decorations
The rest of the props can be set almost anywhere too. Try to build vignettes or scenes for bald spots or to replace furniture you won’t use during the party. Get a clapboard, directors chair and
movie camera to make one scene. Breaking down the area in floor plan and then assigning decor is the easiest and cost effective way to decorate for a party. If you just buy without a plan, you will waste your money.
Don’t forget to get some life sized cutouts of your favorite celebrities to sprinkle around the party. You and your guests will mingle among the stars during your Oscar’s party. Plan ahead with some of these Oscar party ideas and you will celebrate the Oscar’s in style at your party!
